What it does · where it’s used

  1. Fold a beam through 90°: right-angle and penta prisms
  2. Erect or rotate an image: Amici roof, Schmidt and Dove prisms
  3. Shift a beam sideways without changing its direction: rhomboid prisms
  4. Steer a beam by a small, fixed angle: wedge prisms
  5. Split white light into its spectrum: equilateral prisms

Eight types.

Open a type for how it works and where it is used. Each can be made in the material and coating you need.

FIG. 02.02
Two Dove prisms, one lying on its side

Dove Prisms

Rotates an image: turn the prism by θ and the image turns by 2θ.

FIG. 02.03
Penta prism on a blue background

Penta Prisms

Deviates a beam by exactly 90°, even if the prism tilts, without inverting the image.

FIG. 02.04
Equilateral prism standing on one end

Equilateral Prisms

Three equal 60° angles: the classic prism for splitting light into its spectrum.

FIG. 02.05
Wedge prism on black

Wedge Prisms

Two flat faces at a shallow angle: deviates a beam by a small, fixed angle.

FIG. 02.06
Rhomboid prism on black

Rhomboid Prisms

Shifts a beam sideways without changing its direction or the image orientation.

FIG. 02.07
Amici roof prism on a light background

Amici Roof Prisms

A right-angle prism with a roof: turns the beam 90° and corrects the image.

FIG. 02.08
Schmidt prism on a white background

Schmidt Prisms

A roof prism that inverts and reverses the image while folding the beam by 45°.

02Also madePrisms

More prism types.

  1. 02.A

    Corner cubes

Retroreflectors: light is sent back towards its source, parallel to the incoming beam, over a wide range of angles.

  2. 02.B

    Beam-splitting prisms

Prism assemblies that divide one beam into two paths.
